US Homeland Security Orders Immediate Removal of DeepSeek Products from Federal Systems

Cointelegraph · Felix Ng

The US Department of Homeland Security has directed all federal civilian agencies to eliminate DeepSeek products from their IT infrastructure.

The directive, announced on Monday, extends to companies affiliated with DeepSeek and any third-party products or services built using DeepSeek technologies, while also prohibiting the agencies involved from acquiring these products in the future.

DHS expressed concerns that continued use of DeepSeek by government personnel and contractors could result in the leaking of sensitive information to China, potentially compromising data related to US citizens and federal government programs.

The department additionally highlighted security flaws found in DeepSeek's iOS app.

The ban became effective immediately upon the order's release on Tuesday.

This action broadens earlier US restrictions targeting DeepSeek, which included prohibitions within the Commerce Department and various branches of the defense, security, and intelligence communities, reflecting the broader strategic competition between the US and China over dominance in artificial intelligence technology.

In a related move, Australia imposed its own ban on DeepSeek products within government systems and devices as of February 2025.

The removal of DeepSeek products marks a significant step in US efforts to safeguard sensitive information from foreign vulnerabilities and maintain national security amid rising AI competition.
