ECB explores AI agent payments in new digital euro innovation program

Cointelegraph · Yohan Yun

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a new phase of its digital euro innovation platform, inviting fintechs, payment companies and other entities to develop and test payments technology involving AI agents. Scheduled for the first half of 2027, the program includes prototype development for e-receipts, multiparty transactions, and conditional payments, alongside workshops on digital euro applications such as AI-enabled payments and machine-to-machine interactions.

New Phase of the Digital Euro Innovation Platform

The ECB has opened applications for a new round of its digital euro innovation platform focusing on AI-powered payments. The program is divided into two main tracks: hands-on testing of payment features and workshops on future digital euro use cases.

During the experimentation track running from January to June 2027, selected participants will develop prototypes including e-receipts, multiparty transactions, conditional payments, and new front-end features.

Workshops on Future Use Cases and Ongoing Pilot Programs

In the first half of 2027, workshops will cover AI-enabled payments, micropayments, machine-to-machine interactions, and public service applications of the digital euro. A subset of participants will present their findings at the ECB's Frankfurt headquarters.

The digital euro is a proposed retail CBDC designed to operate alongside cash in the euro area. Notably, 36 banks and payment firms, such as Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank, have been selected for a separate 12-month pilot starting in the second half of 2027. Any official issuance will require EU legislation and an ECB decision.

Why it matters

The ECB's initiative to engage fintech and payment companies in exploring AI integrations within the digital euro emphasizes innovation in central bank digital currency development. The experimentation and workshops will help identify promising use cases and enhance user experience. This marks a critical phase in establishing the technical and regulatory groundwork necessary for the digital euro's introduction, potentially transforming the retail payments landscape across the euro area.
