Crypto Projects Apply for Anthropic’s New Frontier AI Security Scanner

Cointelegraph · Felix Ng

Ethereum client developer Nethermind and Bitcoin and Lightning wallet ZEUS are among the crypto companies that have applied for a newly launched Anthropic program granting open-source projects access to security reports generated by its most powerful AI models. The OSS Scanner, launched by Anthropic to help developers detect and fix vulnerabilities before exploitation, offers rapid code scanning and immediate delivery of vulnerability reports to participating projects.

Anthropic’s New Security Tool for Open-Source Projects

Anthropic introduced the OSS Scanner, a new program leveraging its most advanced AI models, including Claude Mythos, to provide open-source developers with enhanced capabilities for vulnerability detection and remediation. Previously, vulnerabilities were identified following manual human reviews, slowing the dissemination of critical security information. Now, reports will be generated immediately after automated scanning processes.

The service is opt-in and builds upon Anthropic’s earlier Project Glasswing initiative. The company emphasizes OSS Scanner’s role in helping projects respond faster to potential threats, thus lowering the risk of breaches.

Crypto Companies Among Early Applicants

Ethereum client Nethermind has applied for a full repository audit. ZEUS, a Bitcoin and Lightning wallet, requested scans focusing on vulnerabilities involving payments, private keys, and connections to Lightning Services. Another applicant, VirtEngine, is a decentralized cloud computing marketplace built on the Cosmos SDK.

Beyond crypto projects, applicants include developers of AI assistants, agent security tools, machine learning infrastructure, software development, cloud storage, and energy system control tools. None of the pull requests had been merged by the time of reporting.

Threat Landscape and Implications of the Innovation

This year, crypto firms have reported AI-assisted attacks. Bitcoin swap provider Boltz suspended operations in August after attackers began creating exploits faster than the team could patch them. Similarly, payment service PayPerQ reported repeated attacks it suspects were powered by AI.

Anthropic cautions that in the near term, AI may favor attackers, as exploit development becomes cheaper while verifying and fixing vulnerabilities remains slow and heavily dependent on human input. Access to tools like OSS Scanner could thus be pivotal in strengthening the security posture of open-source software, especially vital crypto infrastructure.

Why it matters

In the rapidly evolving realm of crypto cybersecurity, where vulnerabilities can cause substantial losses, access to cutting-edge AI tools is critical. By offering OSS Scanner, Anthropic aids open crypto projects to quickly identify weaknesses, enhancing their defense and reducing the risk of large-scale breaches. As AI-powered attacks increase, maintaining an even playing field for defenders is crucial to securing the entire infrastructure.
