Crypto Trading Bots Remain Vulnerable Despite Major Tech Firms’ Emergency Certificate Revocations

Cointelegraph · Helen Partz

Cryptocurrency trading bots and exchange applications may still be susceptible to a security flaw related to certificates issued by eMudhra, an Indian certificate authority, even after urgent fixes were implemented by leading tech companies, according to blockchain security firm CertiK.

By Tuesday, technology leaders such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft had revoked eight vulnerable certificates issued by eMudhra. However, Peiyu Wang, senior director of digital asset security at CertiK, expressed concerns that these mitigations might not fully protect crypto applications that rely on alternative security frameworks.

Wang explained that while disabling the certificates on popular browsers significantly lowers risk for users who receive and enforce these updates, many crypto-related apps functioning outside the browser environment may not enforce certificate transparency policies or benefit from similar certificate revocation measures.

He emphasized that cryptocurrency services are not intrinsically more exposed to the eMudhra certificate vulnerability compared to other sectors. Nonetheless, attackers could exploit the compromised certificates to fraudulently mimic HTTPS connections used by exchanges, wallet interfaces, and APIs, potentially deceiving users.

Such attackers could impersonate cryptocurrency services to alter deposit addresses or trick users into authorizing malicious transactions. However, these exploits would also require intercepting or redirecting users’ internet traffic, as possession of the compromised certificate authority keys alone would not reveal private wallet keys.

Wang urged operators within the crypto ecosystem to promptly update their software and trusted certificate stores, and to verify that their applications effectively reject any certificates affected by this vulnerability.

This report included contributions from Felix Ng.

The ongoing vulnerability of crypto trading bots and related applications to the eMudhra certificate flaw underscores the importance of comprehensive security measures beyond browser-level defenses. This vigilance is crucial to protecting users from sophisticated attacks that exploit compromised digital certificates.

Why it matters

Understanding and addressing the continuing vulnerabilities associated with eMudhra certificates is essential to safeguarding crypto platforms and their users from potential deceptive attacks leveraging compromised HTTPS connections.
